Keeping Donegal With You Through Art
We Irish do love to travel. In the past it was forced upon us, the rugged and inhospitable landscape sending many across the seas in search of work. And the wanderlust has never left us. Wherever you go in the world, you will always meet an Irish community, and it won’t be long before they are wistfully regaling you with tales of home. Donegal: vast, wild, and infinitely beautiful is never far from the heart.
And this is Morag’s inspiration, bringing our wondrous scenery to life on canvas, your favourite piece of Donegal captured forever in your mind. And on your wall. A beautiful gift for those far from home, a cherished keepsake for those here.
Morag McCafferty, Artist
Donegal based but originally from Glasgow, Morag was Inspired and encouraged by her late father to start creating again because he remembered she liked it at school!
Morag loved art at second level school and she discovered she had a talent for it when she was put forward for a Schools Art Competition in Kelvingrove Art Galleries in Glasgow in the early 80’s where she came second in her category, the bug took hold then. Life had other plans so after a hiatus of the guts of 25 years she picked up brushes for the very first time. Morag is self-taught and she admits it can be a struggle without any formal training and has been painting since 2010, dabbling away and honing her art without realising it. She has been selling seriously now since 2019. The demand for her work has been fantastic and prints of her paintings have become so popular that she has had to do many re-prints. Her Fine Art Prints are limited to just 100 in each edition, and when they’re gone, they’re gone.
Morag’s style is realism fine art and her preferred medium is oils but likes to dabble in other mediums too. She mostly uses photographs as reference but thoroughly enjoys plein air and takes reference from sketches also. Detail influences heavily in her work which is time consuming but definitely gives her work depth but like most artists, she uses Artistic licence as a painting evolves. Morag also enjoys a bit of contemporary abstract painting where “I just see where my head takes me.”
Morag started this journey because she needed to liven up her own wall’s in her home not thinking for one minute that it would go anywhere, the “hobby” has now became a living and that she feels truly blessed about. It all came about as a result of family and friends reactions to her art and it evolved from there. Morag has always said she will paint only what she would like to have hanging herself, obviously Commissions are a separate entity. She feels then she can be totally invested in the piece, she always stays true to herself. She believes you are showing your soul through art and it is impossible to please all of the people all of the time so she only paints what she will enjoy looking at herself. Sometimes the scene can be mundane but on canvas it can become alive and magical and take you there with a different outlook. When we are young we have no fear, our imaginations are at the fore and unfortunately as we grow that gets taken away in a lot of cases so getting lost in art is a privilege.
Morag’s works, Originals and Prints have now found homes Globally. She works from her Gallery/Studio at her home in Ranafast, County Donegal and her door is open and you are welcome to come in and browse and chat.
